This section contains information regarding the course that is important to parents/guardians and to their young athletes. Age groups will have different course lengths in the swim, bike and run events. Reading and following these instructions will help assure that race day will be safe and enjoyable for kids and adults alike.
The swim is approximately 20 yards long (yellow wave), 40 yards (red wave), 50 yards (green wave), and 60 yards (blue wave). Athletes will meet on the beach and be assigned in age/gender waves for their starts. The swim course will run parallel to the shore and athletes will be in water they can likely touch in. For longer swims, athletes will do ‘laps’ of the swim course. Volunteers will be there to assist. There will be signage and volunteers to direct athletes to the Transition Area located in the parking lot.
In the Transition Area athletes will prepare for the bike portion of the event. Helmets must be worn and buckled. Bikes must be walked to the exit (Bikes Out) of the Transition Area. There will be a bike mounting area outside the Transition Area. Volunteers will be in the Transition Area and bike mounting area to assist athletes.
The bike segment is ideal for a dirt bike/mountain bike because the course runs on packed dirt and gravel camp roads. Training wheels are not recommended due to the terrain. The bike segment is approximately ½ mile or 1 loop (yellow wave), 1 mile or 3 loops (red wave), 1 ¼ mile or 4 loops (green wave), and 2 miles or 6 loops (blue wave). Athletes will be in charge of counting their own laps. The course will be marked by cones and signs. Athletes will return to the bike dismount area and Transition Area after their last lap. This will be clearly marked and staffed by volunteers.
Riders will stop and dismount in the bike dismount area and walk to and in the Transition Area. Helmets may not be removed until the athlete is at his/her Transition Area. The athlete will then prepare for the run segment. There will be volunteers to assist the athletes. The athlete will walk to the Run Out exit from the Transition Area and follow the cones and signs to the running course.
The run is approximately ¼ mile or 1 lap (yellow wave), ½ mile or 3 laps (red wave), ¾ mile or 5 laps (green wave), and 1 mile or 6 laps (blue wave). The athletes will be running laps around the baseball field area and the number of laps will depend on their wave. Athletes are responsible for counting their own laps. The finish line area is near the family picnic area (you can’t miss it!) and the athletes will receive a participation medal and may proceed to the picnic area with their families after they’re finished. It’s time to celebrate!
