Name: Barb Richards
Favorite
thing about triathlon: I competed in my first triathlon
August 1st in Medical Lake. This being my first triathlon,
my only goal was to finish each part to the best of my
ability, without caring about time. this soon changed the
minute I heard that the average first time participant would
finish in 1hr 20 minutes prior to the race starting. Me, not
being one who likes to be average, made up my mind that I
would beat that time. I finished in 1hr 13 min... not bad
for a first timer. I would have to say that my most favorite
thing about competing in the triathlon was that I was
excited to do another one. Goals for next year, Valley Girl,
Medical Lake, and Wonder Woman.
Favorite
race:
I made a promise to myself last
year that I would get out and do something mentally or
physically challenging every month for 2009. With the
recruitment of a few friends and support of family. I
started the year in Deer Park with the Frostbite run. Feb
1st, I found myself, plus two, on top of Mt. Spokane for
Souper Bowl Sunday trekking around in snow shoes. The end of
Feb we were jumping into Medical Lake for our first Polar
Bear Plunge, BRRRR! March was a rainy 5 mile run for St
Patty's Day. In April we participated in the Only Fools Run
at Midnight and the Race for the Cure. May was the
Windermere 1/2 Marathon (looking forward to doing this run
again next year). In June, I was on the coast and ran my
first trail run, The Hot Foot Run, a 5k, placing 2nd in my
age group (YEA! my first running ribbon). July was a very
HOT HOT Cherry Pickers Trot. August 1st was the Medical Lake
Mini Triathlon and the Tri-Fusion Hot Summer Nights Series.
Sept. will be a 13 mile Sundae Sunday run. I don't have a
favorite race at this time as all the events prove to have
their own individual challenges and the year is not over
yet. Oct, Nov. and Dec are filling fast. Just a heads up, I
am once again recruiting for the Dec. Jingle Bell Run. This
will be Team Leon's 3rd year, all are welcome.
Top
workout:
My
girl friends and I have just been winging it through the
year, adding what we need to for each event. The only actual
schedule we stuck to was a 10 week training schedule prior
to the 1/2 marathon. The schedule made it easy because it
had mini goals along the way. I don't have a set workout, I
try to alternate cardio and weight training. This is an area
I am looking forward to some guidance from the group.
Preferred training toy: Having a training partner has been
an absolute life saver for me. My newest toy would be my
Ruby Elite Specialized bike, fun fun...I love to ride.
Eats:
While
I can count calories with the best, knowing what percentage
to eat and when to eat it is my biggest down fall. If there
is an easy formula or book out there some where please
share. I am, for the most part a healthy eater,(not a big
sweets fan). If I had a down fall, it would be that I don't
eat enough.
Hobbies:
Time
with family and friends, reading, biking, kayaking, music,
cooking, traveling, lying in the sun (yes, I know this is
bad for me), running, window shopping, zipping around town
on my scooter, x country skiing, snow shoeing, and
recruiting family and friends to walk, run, ride, or just
hang out.
Career:
ER
Nurse at Holy Family. LOVE IT!
Why Tri-Fusion?
The support given to
everyone during the Hot Summer Nights Series was awesome.
Always positive and encouraging. Belonging to a group is a
great motivator for me. Training tips and actual verbal
feedback will be wonderful. Reaching my goals, being able to
share them with others who have a similar interest and
hopefully helping others reach their goals. I am looking
forward to meeting new people, learning about new training
routes and routines.
